Lifeguard Review Class

 

ONE DAY CLASS

This class is 12 hours to get the re-certification done in one day.


This class is for those who have ALREADY been Lifeguard Certified by American Red Cross in the past, but whose cards have expired (within thirty days of the last day of the class) or are set to expire before or during the upcoming summer season. If you plan to work as a lifeguard this summer for Sweetwater Pools and your certification cards are expired or will expire, you must take this class. By the end of this two day course you will be recertified for American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, Bloodborne Pathogen Training, and First Aid.

 

The Employee Rate is for employees ONLY:

This class is $75.00 for all who turn in applications BEFORE the class begins. A valid credit card on file is required to take the course at this price; this card will be charged $205.00 if the an individual registers as an employee then does not work with Sweetwater Pools, Inc.

 

The Non-Employee Rate is $205.00

Tiger Trail is located off of Gessner, 1 block south of the Hammerly Intersection. Drive past the high school, and then the Natatorium is the cream colored building next to the baseball field.

Coming from Beltway 8 and Hammerly, take a right onto Shadowdale and follow that around to a stop sign.  Go straight at the stop sign and the pool is on the left.

Please use the North Entrance of the Natatorium (Closest to the baseball field). All other doors are locked for security reasons.

Before the class it is strongly suggested that students who have not swam in a while or are weaker swimmers take some time to get some practice in. During the spring and summer there will be free practices before some of the classes to prepare for the pre-course test.

 

On the Day of Class

·         Sweetwater Pools employees (and those who have applied to work for Sweetwater Pools) please arrive by 8:00 AM in order to complete their employee orientation, I-9 paperwork, learn how to test the pool water, brush the walls, vacuum the pool, positively interact with patrons of all ages, learn how to clean bathrooms, fill out necessary daily paperwork, learn the basics of a pump room and how to do some basic troubleshooting, learn how to backwash, discuss company policies and special weather and safety situations, go over the clock in  and out system,  discuss the basics of When I work, go over the season's in-service schedule and the importance of continued education as a lifeguard, get information about socials and employee incentive programs and awards throughout the summer season and any other pertinent information necessary to be a great Sweetwater Pools, Inc. employee.

·         Non-Employees need to arrive at 9:00 AM .

Please be prepared to complete the Pre-Course Swim Test on the first day at 9:00 AM. The swim test includes:

  • Prerequisite #1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest: First, jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or combination of both (Swimming on the back of side is not permitted. Goggles are allowed. Next, Maintain a position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs. Lastly, swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. 

  • Prerequisite #2: Brick retrieval - swim 20 yards, surface dive to the bottom, retrieve a 10 lbs. weight, surface and swim back to your starting point while keeping both hands on the 10 lbs. weight within one minute and forty seconds. Goggles are not permitted. 

 Prospective Sweetwater Pools, Inc. employees only:

1. Please bring any hiring paperwork you have yet to turn in such as applications, uniform orders, etc.

2.  Please bring I-9 verification documents with you on the first day of class. Acceptable documents include a picture ID such as a driver’s license or school ID AND your Social Security Card or Birth Certificate. A valid passport is also acceptable documentation for the I-9 verification. Only original documents will be accepted. Please put these documents into an envelope or Ziploc bag with your name on it. They will be returned to you as soon as the form is completed by SWP instructors. The following link will take you to a website that explains the I-9 Form.

 All prospective lifeguards please take care of all payments on or before the first day of class. If you bring cash, please put it in a plastic bag with your name on it. Employees have the option of filling out a payroll deduction form; please contact the Aquatics Director by phone or email to get a form and fill it out before the first day of class.  Please bring:

  • A swimsuit – Several if you have them

1.   Females should only wear one-piece suits or two piece lifeguarding suits.

2.   Males wear board shorts, no Speedos please.

  • Pocket Mask (Available for sale for $15.00)

  • One or more towels.

  • A pen for writing.

  • Snacks & drinks.

  • A change of clothes, including some warm clothes as the facility and water can be cold at times. Some participants have even brought blankets or jackets to stay warm.

  • If a class is outdoors be sure to bring sunscreen, sunglasses and any clothes depending on the weather forecast. Early season classes mean cold water so please bring appropriate clothes to stay warm

 

There will be a short lunch break around midday on the first day of class and several small breaks throughout the class as the instructors deem necessary.

Please do NOT bring valuables to class. The Spring Branch Natatorium has lockers available in the Men’s and Women’s Dressing Rooms if necessary. Students may bring a lock to secure their belongings in one of the available lockers.
